The Interview
PictureDiane Thomassin, Screenwriter
Where do you live (City, State, or Country)?
Ventura, CA

Your script stood out among hundreds of others. What was the inspiration for your story and why did you write a script instead of a short story or a novel?
Writing a screenplay instead of another type of work was a strategic choice. It can open up doors in the entertainment industry for me, a Latina and Native-American who offers diversity and a voice to be heard.

Learning and writing about narcissistic traits was a game changer for me and changed the course of my life. If I would not have learned about NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder), I would not be giving this interview today. I was under the toxic influence of narcissists for too long and didn’t write because I was told it was “crazy” and “delusional.” Narcissists are bullies. It’s important to recognize their traits in order to protect ourselves from harmful relationships. Everyone has at least some narcissistic traits, but the problem with NPD is much more deeper and destructive. It’s much more than being conceited, it’s about manipulation, the lack of empathy, and a powerful urge to control and dominate others. The controlling behavior of narcissists is a worldwide problem that can affect intimate relationships, family dynamics, workplace environments, and of course,  politics. Narcissists often seek to exert power and control over others, and they may use tactics such as gaslighting, manipulation, and emotional abuse to maintain their dominance. If we can identify these traits, we can safeguard ourselves by not engaging with narcissistic people, and using skills we develop if we must deal with them to protect our mental health and wellbeing.

How long did it take you to write your script...and what is your writing process? Do you outline...use index cards...white board...or just start with FADE IN.
I just fade in. I begin writing by diving right in, following a stream of thought. After that, I repeatedly go back to polish the script until I'm satisfied with the result. My co-writer, Michael Miceli, brought his own writing style and talents to the project. We discussed the script's direction and realized it was veering toward a tone reminiscent of a Lifetime movie. While there's nothing wrong with Lifetime movies (I love them and would be honored to write one), this script needed to be more original and assertive. I believe we successfully achieved that. I'm especially pleased with the ending and sharing a creative work that I am proud of brings fulfillment unlike any other. It took 6 months to complete the script.

What is your ultimate ambition as a writer?
My ultimate ambition as a writer is to express my thoughts and ideas, creating content that inspires, motivates, and lifts others up. My greatest achievement would be to empower people to transform their lives, just as I have transformed mine.

Which film or television writers inspire you? Why?
I admire Clint Eastwood for his ability to explore themes of justice, resilience, and redemption in his work, which aligns with my own artistic goals. He is known for respecting the original vision of screenwriters, which sets him apart in the industry. In television, I am inspired by the work of Chuck Lorre and going back, the brilliant way Norman Lear incorporated social commentary into his comedies. However, I believe there is a lack of diversity and inclusion in the current film and television landscape and hope to see more underrepresented voices and perspectives celebrated and respected in the entertainment industry. I commend filmmakers like Clint who lift up diverse voices, and I would love to see more diverse representation and recognition of talented minority filmmakers and screenwriters.

What’s your all-time favorite movie or television show?
I have a deep appreciation for classic films such as Casablanca and those by Frank Capra. I love films that showcase human resilience. Among TV shows, my all-time favorite is "Northern Exposure" for its seamless blending of humor, drama, and introspective storytelling. The show was so successful at creating quirky, endearing characters with compelling storylines and growth arcs. Its exploration of philosophical and existential themes resonates strongly with me. The incorporation of Native American culture and traditions adds a layer of authenticity to the show. It remained authentic while avoiding stereotypes. I am particularly drawn to shows that can intertwine lighthearted comedy with profound moments of introspection and social commentary.

What advice do you have for writers hoping to win a contest or place as a finalist as you have?
I believe that humility is crucial. It involves listening to feedback and acknowledging that your work can always improve. At the same time, it's important to remain authentic and true to your vision without compromising it to sell your work. And stay positive! Understand that not all your entries will win, but each submission is an opportunity to learn and grow as a writer. Keep writing and improving your craft regardless of the outcome. If anyone tells you that you are “crazy” or “delusional” for writing, tell them to shut up and get out of your way because they are blocking your light. Arise and write!

What else are you working on that the world needs to know about?
I've written another script called A Thousand Sunsets with Michael Miceli. My other scripts include The Magician, The Evolution of Low Joe, The Fall of the Church of Wealth and Faith, and The Allegory of the Hood. Each of these scripts explores themes of redemption and the resilience of the human spirit. I am also ready to pitch and open to teaming up with other writers on similar themed projects.
