SALLY BRUNK

Picture
Sally "Miigwaniigabo" (standing feather woman) was from Baraga, Michigan, a reservation in the Upper Peninsula, on the shores of Lake Superior, where the story of  Into the Cold, the winning entry in the 2022 Fall Diverse Writers Outreach competition, takes place.

Unfortunately she passed suddenly on September 7, 2022, just a week prior to the announcement of her Diverse Writers Outreach Contest win as co-author (with Helen Cho) of Into the Cold.

An indigenous member of the Anishinaabe residing in Michigan's Upper Peninusula Keweenaw Bay, Sally was the runner up for U.P. Poet Laureate in 2020. She has been published in the anthologies: Sharing Our Stories of Survival: Native Women Surviving Violence, Quill & Parchment: Motherhood, How Can You Say We Are Not Related?, Voice on the Water: Great Lakes Native America Now, The Way North: Upper Peninsula New Works, Here: Women Writing on Michigan’s Upper Michigan, And Here: 100 Years of Upper Peninsula Writing, 1917-2017. Sally has two books of poetry entitled The Cliffs: Summer Soundings (Paintings by Jim Denomie) and her latest, Niiji: a collection of poetry,
a collaboration with Ron Riekki.
